Why calico is a pattern and not a breed

When you see a cat with a striking coat of white, black, and orange, you are looking at a calico. It is a common misconception that “calico” refers to a specific breed of cat. In reality, calico is a color pattern that can appear in many different breeds.

Telling the difference between calico and tortoiseshell

It is easy to confuse calico cats with tortoiseshell cats, but there is a distinct visual difference. Tortoiseshell cats, often called “torties,” also have a mix of black and orange fur. However, they generally have very little to no white fur.

In the United States, calicos are sometimes called “money cats” for similar reasons. This belief in their luck may stem from their rarity, particularly the extreme rarity of the male calico. Sailors in the past were known to keep calico cats on ships, believing they would protect the vessel from storms and bad luck.

The calico is even the official state cat of Maryland. It was given this honor because its colors—white, black, and orange—match the colors of the Baltimore oriole, which is the state bird, and the colors of the state flag.

While the calico pattern itself does not cause specific health problems (except in the case of rare XXY males), all cats require attentive owners who watch for changes in behavior. Urinary health is a common concern for indoor cats. Always ensure your cat has access to fresh water and monitor their litter box usage.
